El Paso Shows Overwhelming Support For Sharp's Run for U.S. Senate

FIVE STATE REPRESENTATIVES FROM EL PASO ENDORSE SHARP FOR U.S. SENATE

(El Paso) — Five State Representatives from El Paso endorsed John Sharp for United States Senate today. As the leading Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, Sharp continues to rack up impressive endorsements across the state.

“John Sharp has the knowledge and experience necessary to tackle the tough economic challenges that face our nation today,” said Representative Norma Chavez. “His proven record of fiscal responsibility and an unflinching commitment to fighting for economic security for the middle class makes him a much needed addition to the Senate.”

Joining Chavez in the endorsement are, Rep. Marisa Marquez, Rep. Joe Moody, Rep. Joe Pickett, and Rep. Chente Quintanilla. Today’s endorsements add to Sharp’s growing list of supporters that also includes State Senator Eliot Shapleigh of El Paso.

Sharp will be in El Paso this Saturday, January 30, for the National Latino Congreso where he will speak on how to rebuild minority communities still suffering from the effects of the current economic downturn. The event is being held at the Camino Real Hotel in the El Paso Grand Ballroom, at 101 South El Paso Street, from 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m.

A former State Representative, State Senator, Chairman of the State’s Energy Agency, and Comptroller of Public Accounts, Sharp created the Texas Performance Review, which helped avert a state income tax while saving taxpayers more than $8.5 billion, the Lone Star Card, which eliminated waste and fraud in the federal food stamps program, and the Texas Tomorrow Fund, the popular pre-paid college tuition program that made college affordable for thousands of middle-class Texas families.

Since leaving the Comptroller’s Office, Sharp created the Travis Fund for families of Texas-based soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, and co-founded Texans to Cure Cancer, the largest anti-cancer initiative ever launched in the state.

John has been married to his wife Charlotte for more than 30 years and has two grown children, Spencer and Victoria.

John is a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in a special election to be held after Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison resigns her seat this year.
